A digital signature certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key issued by recognised Certifying Authorities (CAs) to validate the identity of the certificate holder. It contains information of an individual’s name, digital signature, date of issuance of the certificate and date of expiry, and the name of the CA.
Class 1 certificate is issued to both businesses and individuals to verify and confirm the user’s name and email id as mentioned in the consumer database. This certificate is less popular and of less significance.
Class 2 certificate is issued to business entities and individuals to vertify the identity from a pre-verifies database. This type is used for online filing or efiling of documents with MCA, GST, Income Tax etc. Class 2 certificates are issued on a USB token after completeing the online KYC process.
Class 3 certificate is an upgraded version of Class 2 and the most secure type of DSC used to verify identity of the signee for ecommerce, etendering etc. It is used by business entity and individuals to participate in bidding for government tenders and auctions. Class 3 DSC are issued only after the Registering Authority verifies the in-person identity of the applicant.
