Goods & Service Tax - GST

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax (or consumption tax) used in India on the supply of goods and services.The GST is an all-in-one tax that subsumes a variety of taxes like VAT, Entertainment Tax, Luxury Tax, Octroi, CST, Service Tax, Excise Duty. GST is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax that is levied on every value addition.Goods and services are divided into five different tax slabs for collection of tax - 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Taxpayers with a turnover of less than Rs.1.5 crore can opt for composition scheme to get rid of tedious GST formalities and pay GST at a fixed rate of turnover. As per the law, GST is to be charged at every step starting from production process to end consumer., It provides the benefit of taking full set-off claim of the paid tax. It is collected from point of consumption and not point of origin.

What are the GST tax rates?

No Tax : For Items that are considered basic necessities are not taxed.
5% Tax : For Household necessities and Medicines which are life saving etc.
12% Tax : For Products like processed food etc.
18% Tax : For goods like Hair oil, toothpaste, capital goods, industrial intermediaries and services etc.
28% Tax : For Luxury items etc.

What is GST Return ?

A GST Return is a document / permission containing details that is required to be filed and that is recorded under the GST Act.

Under the GST law, a taxpayer has to submit online returns on a monthly basis, quarterly and annually.

GST Return Filing is to be filed electronically only on the GST portal.

What is a GSTIN ?

GSTIN is an unique 15-digit alphanumeric identification code that is allotted to registered GST taxpayer.

The first 2 digits of the GSTIN represent the state code,The next 10 digits are the PAN number of the entity,The 14th digit is Z by default,The 15th or the last digit is the Checksum digit which is automatically calculated of the other 14 digits.

To verify a GSTIN number a person who has a GST number can log onto the GST portal.

Who should get GST?

1. Previous Law Converted Taxpayer :

All individuals taxpayers or companies registered under the state or central taxes like Service Tax, VAT, Entertainment Tax, Luxury Tax, Octroi, CST, Excise Duty, etc.


2. Goods Provider :

Mandatory for sales or turnover of goods crossing Rs. 40 lakh in a year.


3. Service Provider :

Mandatory for service provider & sales or turnover is crossing Rs. 20 lakh.


4. Brands Business :

Suppying goods or service under his Brand or Trade Name.


5. Branches Business :

Operating business in multiple branches in multiple states, one has to register one palce as main / head office and the remaining as branch offices. (Not applicable for business with separate verticals as listed in Section 2 (18) of the CGST Act, 2017.)


6. Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM) :

Bank account is required to shareholder to deposit the initial capital. Every bank have list of documents for opening an account.


7. Others :

E-Commerce Portals & Sellers, Agents of Suppliers or Input Service Distributor (ISD), NRI handling business in India,Transferee- who have transferred there line of business, Persons who are required to deduct tax u/s 37 (TDS) of the Income Tax Act, Voluntary GST Registration, Inter-State Registration.


8. Special Category States under GST Act :

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Himachal Pradesh can opt for concessional rate tax.

Stages For GST Registration

Stage 1. Primary Mobile & Email :

Stage 2. Temporary reference number :

Temporary reference number is send to the primary email and mobile number.


Stage 3. Upload Documents :

DSC(Indivial / Director/ Authorised Signatory) or EVC is required for further process.


Stage 4. Acknowledgement :

ARN will be generated once all the process is completed properly.


Stage 5. GST Certificate :
